Over Thirty Leaders from Around the State Turned Out to Learn How to Strengthen Our Union

Last week, over thirty leaders joined AFSCME Colorado for a series of trainings designed to strengthen our union. On Friday, a dozen leaders joined us to discuss best practices and strategies to recruit new employees to the union. We learned how to build our union through having intentional conversations, info sessions, and materials specifically for recently hired people in the unit.  We were excited to develop a unique offering for members hoping to bring people into our union as strong as possible. This training was designed to welcome people to our organization and our union simultaneously. From the moment a potential member walks in the door, we should work to get to know them and their story, and tell them about our union. The strength of this is that, when done correctly, it not only inspires new employees to join our union but also encourages them to learn ways they can become an activist within the union. A warm welcome does more than greet our new colleagues; it invites them into a culture where we are building power and strength to help ourselves and our colleagues navigate life and the job, and ways to make both better. Now, we can host this training whenever we need. If you are excited about inspiring new employees to join our union, reach out and let us know. Together, we can continue making our union strong.

What was most encouraging about the training weekend was that this was not the first time these trainings were held. Demand for new employee outreach training has increased, but even more so has the number of officers who are engaged and excited to build worker power among public service workers. Not even a year ago, our New Officer Training had about a dozen people at it. This year, we had over thirty people in attendance. Representing new unions we’ve organized in the past year, unions reinvigorated and inspired by new organizing efforts, and our longstanding active unions, this training was full of the next era of AFSCME Colorado.

As we continue to grow, so does our need to keep learning how to grow our union! As such, we’re excited to keep offering trainings so that members can continue learning how to build power at the workplace. Curious about our training sessions and other offerings? Learn more here!
