Across Colorado, union stewards serve as the frontline of defense for workers. This month, AFSCME Colorado hosted a training to prepare and certify a new group of stewards from recently organized workplaces, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to stand up for their coworkers.

In recent years, AFSCME Colorado has grown at a record pace following historic union election victories. While many of these workers are still negotiating their first contracts, they already have important rights on the job. During the training, participants learned how to use those rights to advocate for themselves and their colleagues, address workplace issues with management, and represent coworkers in disciplinary meetings.

Dozens of workers packed a Denver conference room for the day-long session, discussing real-life scenarios and sharing strategies for building power on the job. By the end of the training, each participant was officially certified as an AFSCME Colorado steward, ready to be that first line of defense for their coworkers.

Now, these new stewards return to their workplaces better equipped to protect one another, strengthen their unions, and ensure that every worker’s voice is heard.
