Lesly Trejo worked as a custodian at the University of Denver (DU). She was one of almost 200 members of AFSCME Local 1572 who maintain safe and clean facilities for students, staff and visitors.

It’s hard work, but Trejo is proud of her contributions to the university and the people who work and study there.

All that came to a sudden end in June when she was unjustly fired after suffering a lifting injury on the job. With nowhere else to go, she turned to her AFSCME union for support.

Her case took months to resolve, and it went all the way to arbitration. Her fellow AFSCME members supported her every step of the way.

After hearing both sides of the case, the arbitrator decided in her favor. The arbitration decision ruled against Sodexo — the private company that DU relies on for custodial and building maintenance services — for violating the union contract.

Trejo was awarded almost $20,000 in back pay and will get her old job back at DU.

“My case of unjustified dismissal was resolved favorably, achieving my return to work,” she said. “I deeply appreciate the support and constant guidance provided by AFSCME, who were key in defending my rights throughout the process.”

Local 1572 members are excited to have Trejo back at work. And Sodexo managers are on notice: AFSCME members will hold them accountable if they violate the rules and procedures in the contract.

“Thanks to the support and intervention of the members of AFSCME, my labor rights were effectively defended,” Trejo explained. “As a result, a favorable resolution was reached that allowed me to return to my job, restoring my job stability and recognizing the importance of following the right processes within employment.”

This win shows the power of being part of a strong AFSCME union that fights for fairness and due process for every member.
